SLT-MOBITEL powers historic 125th Battle of the Blues Ruhuna Cricket encounter

SLT-MOBITEL served as the ‘Official Telecommunication Partner’ for the 125th Battle of the Blues Ruhuna Annual Cricket encounter between St. Thomas’ College and St. Servatius’ College, played from April 4th to April 6th, 2025.

The historic grounds of Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara came alive as the three-day cricket spectacle, steeped in tradition and sportsmanship, showcased exceptional talent from both renowned schools. Despite impressive performances from both teams, the match ended in a draw owing to prevailing weather conditions.

Named after two cricketing greats, former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya of St. Servatius’ and former Sri Lanka cricketer Indika de Seram of St. Thomas’, the ‘Sanath Jayasuriya – Indika de Seram Trophy’ represents the rich cricketing heritage that has defined the inter-school rivalry for over a century.

The event strengthened the bonds between the two schools and united the Matara community in celebration of sport, education, and shared values. The encounter drew crowds of enthusiastic supporters, alumni, and cricket enthusiasts from across the Southern Province.

The Battle featured outstanding performances from both teams in displays of impressive talent and determination. The spirited competition also demonstrated the values of discipline, teamwork, and excellence that both educational institutions have nurtured for decades.

Viran Chamuditha from St. Servatius’ College was crowned Man of the Match, with the award presented by Prabhath Dahanayake, Group Chief Marketing Officer, SLT-MOBITEL, who also served as Guest of Honour at the opening day and Chief Guest at the closing ceremony. The events were attended by SLT-MOBITEL representatives including Hasaranga Vidanapathirana, Deputy General Manager-Provincial Business (SP), and several other officials.

SLT-MOBITEL’s support extended to providing comprehensive connectivity solutions for spectators and organizers while facilitating the live broadcasts of the match nationwide. The company further enhanced the event experience with innovative branding to create a vibrant and memorable atmosphere for spectators during the closing ceremony. It enabled cricket enthusiasts across the country to experience the excitement and tradition of the Battle.

The Battle of the Blues Ruhuna was carried out with the aim of upgrading and uplifting the cricketing talents of children in the Southern Province, particularly in the Matara District, allowing the company to create a meaningful and impactful engagement with the local community.
